Stories From Past Participants

“There are no words to express this retreat and the gratefulness I feel. My husband and I walked in, me having little hope for my marriage and walked out having connected in a way we haven’t in a very long time, I now have hope and faith in us, a renewed energy. The tools are realistic, applicable, and though I am sure its not easy, hearing about what others went through and seeing how far they have come was incredibly helpful. I only wish this event was longer maybe 3 days to allow for more practice, time together, and learning. Thank you for all you do, I wish every single first responder couple could do this retreat.”

First Responder

“This was a huge eye opening experience for us both. The tears I shed were true and authentic. I realized I have a lot of work to be done on myself my relationship with my husband and family. I was blind to certain things. I was a first responder for a long time. Now I’m a stay at home job (BTW this is the hardest but most rewarding job of my life) now I’m a spouse of a firefighter and paramedic. I know the life the long hours but now I’m on the opposite side. Very eye opening.”

Margo, First Responder Spouse

You woke up my husband!!! I am in awe and feeling total gratitude to have sat before you 4 and have been shown just how important and sacred our marriage is. It felt genuine and important to hear what you had to say. The vulnerability, the storytelling, the pacing was all so beautifully orchestrated to where my husband and I could relax in trust, and do the work…in a room full of people!

I don’t know why you chose to bring this program to our community, but it feels like oxygen in a community that has been suffocating for a long time. I will do what I can to promote you guys!”

Diedra, First Responder Spouse

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Stronger Families?

We are a nonprofit organization that specializes in strengthening First Responder relationships. We provide both in-person and virtual events that are battle tested to improve communication, conflict resolution, understanding, love, and more. Over 90,000 people have attended an OXYGEN event or retreat!

Learn more about us at https://strongerfamilies.org

What should we expect at the retreat?

The retreat offers a relaxed, semi-classroom style presentation for each session. There are usually eight sessions during a retreat, which include breaks and evenings off for bonding time. The OXYGEN material has been successfully utilized for over a decade and has uniquely catered these retreats to address the needs of First Responder couples.

Stronger Families also provides coaching & counseling sessions during the conference, and follow-up resources specifically vetted for First Responders.

Lastly, don’t worry, no one will make you or your partner do/say anything you are not comfortable with (such as speaking in front of a crowd).

How can I convince my partner to attend?

Ask your partner what they would like to have “more of” or “less of” in your relationship. Don’t argue with them, just invite them to consider the retreat might help them in achieving that.

What if we are not married?

Yes, Stronger Families wants to strengthen relationships no matter what the status of that relationship is.

What if we don’t have major relationship problems?

You don’t have to have problems to work on your relationship. In fact, it’s better to do that when you’re not having problems. We are focused on you connecting with your partner, having fun, and building skills.

What if my partner cannot go?

As the teaching and the tools of the Retreat are so Couple-Focused, we require that both people attend the event. So much of what we learn during the retreat is immediately applied, that to attend the event solo makes it very difficult to apply the information as a couple when you get home.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that unexpected things can happen, and you may need to cancel. You can cancel up to 30 days before the retreat to receive a full refund. After 30 days, we will no longer be able to issue a refund due to commitments with hotel room reservations.

What if we are not heterosexual?

The Stronger Families First Responder couples retreat is intended for all First Responder couples.

What is included in the price?

Included in the registration fee is one night’s accommodation at the venue, 2 mid-day meals during retreat, free counseling and curriculum from the OXYGEN program.

Are there options for upgrading accommodations?

While there are no options for upgrading the accommodations, we can assist you with booking accommodations for the Friday before and Sunday after the event, using the Stronger Families discount if agreed to by venue.

Is there a structured schedule or is it flexible?

The schedule may adjust slightly, but it remains structured to cover all key sections of the OXYGEN Program. Ample break time will be provided throughout the day.

Are there free time periods for relaxation or personal activities?

The Retreat runs from 8:30-2:30/3:00 on Saturday and Sunday, leaving plenty of time in the afternoon/evening on Saturday for relaxation or personal activities.

Are meals provided during the retreat?

Two mid-day meals are provided during the course of the retreat, as well as coffee, tea, etc. in the event room.  All other meals will be your responsibility.

Can special dietary requirements or allergies be accommodated?

Yes, if you have special dietary requirements, please reach out to [email protected].  We will try our best to accommodate special needs for the two mid-day meals.

What should we bring to the retreat?

There is nothing special that you need to bring, just anything you typically would have with you for a weekend away.

Do we need to prepare anything in advance?

Prior to the start of the event, we will be providing you with instructions for two assessments – the OXYGEN Profile Assessment and the Couple Checkup.  Please print these results and have them with you during the event.

Will we be staying with the same group or mixed with other couples?

You are welcome to sit wherever you like throughout the event. There are no assigned seats or groupings.

Are children allowed to attend?

Because we want you to focus on the weekend and your relationship, children are not allowed to attend the retreat.

Are pets allowed at the retreat?

Service Animals are the only pets allowed at the retreat, based on the protocols of the venue. If you have a service animal, please advise [email protected] and the venue will be notified.
