Inside the Lesson
In this episode, Dr. Meg Meeker—author of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters and medical doctor for over 30 years—discusses a father’s irreplaceable impact on his daughter. Research shows that a daughter with a loving, involved father fares better in many areas of her life, including doing better in school, avoiding sexual activity at an early age, and having a lowered amount of depression and anxiety.
A daughter’s connection with her father is, arguably, the most important male relationship she will have in her life. Simply by being her father, a dad teaches his daughter what male love and trust is all about—a lesson that she carries with her forever. If a daughter has a good relationship with her father, she craves more time with him; if their relationship is tumultuous, she constantly seeks healing from her father. Additionally, a father can have an enormously positive impact on both his daughter’s self-esteem and her mental health—by showing her consistent, unconditional love and teaching her how to fight the battle of her mind.
