“We are more aware of negative things that trigger our partner and more open to seeing from each other’s point of view. We learned how to listen to each other, relate to how the other is feeling, and understand what they are trying to communicate.”

Inside the Lesson

In this episode, Michael Cain—author of The Pain of PTSD and the Healing Power of Journaling and coach for the wounded warriors at Fort Bragg—identifies the signs and symptoms of PTSD and reveals the secret to healing: journaling. According to Cain, there are only two ways to safeguard your heart and mind against the effects of PTSD: talk about it and write about it. The process of journaling may not come naturally for most, but it can make the difference between becoming debilitated by PTSD and breaking free from it. For the spouse of the military member struggling with PTSD, Michael Cain gives some powerful advice on how to support, understand, cope, and heal. Come alongside your spouse, be there when they need to talk, and encourage the small wins and you will witness a significant transformation in your spouse. Most military members are not equipped to handle the intense emotions and memories they experience after war, but with time they can begin to build confidence and identify their triggers.
