“We are more aware of negative things that trigger our partner and more open to seeing from each other’s point of view. We learned how to listen to each other, relate to how the other is feeling, and understand what they are trying to communicate.”

Inside the Lesson

In this episode, Michael Schindler unpacks what military couples can do to stay on the same page during a long separation. He encourages couples to establish a clear path of communication and to create a game plan in the weeks and months leading up to a deployment. In addition, he recommends being intentional about preparing emotionally and approaching the time spouses and families have together with an attitude of embracing, rather than thinking, “This is the last time we will _______.”

Reintegration into family life after a deployment can be difficult for all parties involved. Extend grace during the time of transition, talk through any and all changes, and be willing to compromise. Many couples experience intense communication issues long after the deployment has ended, but finding a good mentor can help mitigate some of those issues. Seek help from someone who has experienced something similar and ask them how they navigated the problem. Make time to work on your relationship with your spouse, and keep pressing on.
